FAA - USA CERTIFICATION - NVG Transition
Bristow Academy's 141 NVG courses are designed to introduce a pilot to flight in helicopters utilizing night vision goggles (NVGs) and the challenges associated with flying an aircraft using NVGs as a primary visual reference to the surface.
The 141 NVG program includes two courses, an initial course and a refresher course. The initial course is designed for helicopter pilots with limited or no previous experience with Night Vision Goggles, while the refresher course is designed for helicopter pilots who are already Night Vision Goggle qualified, but may not have flown under NVGs within the last four months.
Bristow Academy currently employs 20 NVG qualified Flight Instructors, and many of them are former military pilots. The Academy currently flies approximately 75 hours of NVG training per week.
Ground instruction given for the initial course includes the following topics:
- Applicable regulations of title 14 CFR part 61 and part 91 that pertain to NVG operations
- Aeromedical factors related to NVG operations
- Normal, abnormal and emergency procedures
- NVG performance and scene interpretation
- NVG considerations for Flight Planning including scene interpretation
- Night terrain interpretation
- PIC duties and responsibilities under NVGs
Flight instruction includes:
- Preflight preparation and procedures
- NVG handling, adjustment, and focusing
- Adjustment of interior and exterior aircraft lighting systems for NVG operations
- Proper piloting techniques under NVG operations
- Normal takeoffs
- Maximum performance takeoffs
- Normal approaches
- Steep approaches
- Shallow approaches and running landings
- Confined Area operations
Slope landing operations- Other off airport maneuvers, and
- Normal, abnormal and emergency procedures including:
- Procedures to recover from inadvertent entry into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC)
- NVG failure
The course is taught on either the Schweizer 300 CBi or Bell 206 JetRanger B-III helicopter.
